I'm starting off New Year 2005 searching out Joseph French. My line is back to Richard, b. abt. 1775;
first found at Walpack NJ. near the Delaware river in Sussex, Nj in 1793.. He named his first daughter Selletie.
At the Zion Lutheran Church, 1770's in New Germantown, now Oldwick New Jersey, I find Joseph French + Eleanora,
and in 1782 & 83 a Richard French + Selletje in the Church records when they babtise William and
Ann.
If Joseph is of age to father children he is probably b. around 1745-50, but perhaps he is older?
Does anybody have a Joseph on the records with a brother or son Richard?
I find these texts on the internet:

" It has been found through a recently discovered mortgage deed given by Samuel Smith of the County of Morris to Joseph French of
the City of New York, recorded in Morristown, N. J., Book A, page 23 of mortgages, that Richard Smith owned land here as early
as 1738." from http://alvyray.com/Family/dag/all-p/p185.htm
Cannot find that Joseph on Family search.
Then: This Joseph is apparently a Loyalist- from Woodbridge, which is 23 miles from Jersey City.
That Colonel Nathaniel Heard, of Woodbridge, in the colony of New
Jersey, taking with him five or six hundred minute men, under discreet officers, do march to the western part of Queen's
(sic) county, and that Colonel Waterbury, of Stanford, in the
colony of Connecticut, with the like number of minute men, march to the eastern side of said county; that they confer together, and endeavour to enter the said county on the same day; that they proceed to disarm every person in the said county, who voted against sending deputies to the said convention, and cause them to deliver up their arms and
ammunition on oath, and that they take and confine in safe custody, till further orders, all such as shall refuse compliance. That
they apprehend and secure, till further orders, the persons named as principal men among the disaffected in the said county, in a summons for their appearance before the convention of New York, issued
the 12 of December last, viz. Of Jamaica township, Captain Benjamin Whitehead, Charles Arden, Joseph French, Esq . Johannes Polhemus. Of Newtown, Nathaniel Moore, John Moore,Sen Samuel
Hallet, John Moore, Jun. William Weyman. John Shoals, Jeromus Rapalje.

I searched Familysearch for Joseph French 20 yrs either side of 1739, New Jersey,

This Somerset family additionally produces a Henry, and a John French - I think both are
names found on the tax list 1774 In Sussex NJ.... .)

But let us not forget Sandys post:
Linda: This is what I have on my great-great-great-great grandfather, Joseph French, Sr. He was the son of Thomas French
and Mary Allen. He was born 07/23/1698 in Rancocas, NJ. He married Allee 09/12/1722 at Shrewsbury, NJ Friends Meeting. He
died 07/08/1752. He children are listed as Joseph, Jr., born 1722 in Shrewsbury, NJ, m. Hannah Horn. Aaron, b. 09/08/1739,
Francis, Sr. (my g-g-g-grandfather), born 1740, Monmouth County, NJ, d. 1819, New Gretna, NJ and Mary who married James
Farrell, 1751. I believe that Lafford was Joseph, Jr.'s son. I haven't heard of Michael, Simon or William, but perhaps they
were sons of Joseph also. This line is the weak link in my genealogy chain. You see, there was a falling out between Thomas
and his son, Joseph, Sr. and the line seems to stop there. The only children mentioned in the book, The History of the Thomas
French family, which is in the Burlington County, NJ library are Joseph and Mary. Mary's husband was a lawyer and the executor
of Thomas' estate. Joseph was only left five pounds and a pair of gloves. He should have inherited the bulk of his father's
estate. My g-g-g-grandfather Francis, Sr. is not mentioned, although I have the genealogy listed elsewhere in handwritten
form. I am looking for hard evidence, but have had no luck so far. If you have any other questions, feel free to e-mail me
at erfrench44@hotmail.com. Sandy Johnson
If any one has a handle on any of these Josephs, other than Joseph is probably Lafford's line, PLEASE respond.
Thanks
Dick
